What are Restylane® and Juvéderm™?
Restylane® & Juvéderm™ are the most common cosmetic dermal fillers used to eliminate wrinkles and augment lips and facial features. Restylane® & Juvéderm™ are made up of biodegradable hyaluronic acid, have no animal-based components, and naturally occur in all living things. There is no skin test needed because of its natural formula.
Which Skin Conditions Do Restylane® & Juvéderm™ treat?
Restylane® & Juvéderm™ are often used to remove the wrinkles that appear around the mouth. Specifically, they're used to remove unsightly folds between the nose and lips in the nasolabial area as well as to enhance the lips, themselves. These fillers are also used to remove the depressions under the eyes or eye troughs that can appear with age.
How is Restylane® & Juvéderm™ Administered?
Restylane® & Juvéderm™ are administered by injection into the skin in the area chosen for treatment. The filler is administered as a gel that bonds with the water molecules naturally present in the facial skin, and its effects are noticeable immediately.
What Should I Expect During and Immediately After My Restylane® Treatment?
Very few people who undergo Restylane® & Juvéderm™ treatment show any side effects, but if redness, swelling, bruising, or minor pain develop, they usually last only a few days. Any unsightly blemishes can be covered with makeup.
What Are the Long Term Effects of My Treatment?
After injection, Restylane® & Juvéderm™ typically continue to have their cosmetic effect for six to twelve months before being harmlessly absorbed by the body. RESTYLANE® TREATMENT
Correct Facial Wrinkles with Restylane in New York
Restylane® is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar found within the body that provides youthful volume and elasticity to the skin.  As hyaluronic acid is lost during the natural aging process, facial volume is diminished and wrinkles begin to develop.  Restylane® can help fight these signs of aging by restoring volume and fullness, while softening moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

What is Restylane® and how does it work?
Restylane® is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler that may be used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds.  Designed to work like your body’s own hyaluronic acid, Restylane® injections can immediately smooth facial wrinkling, while restoring youthful fullness to areas of depleted volume.

How is Restylane® different from other fillers?
Restylane® is a safe and effective dermal filler made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar found naturally in the body.  Unlike other types of injectables, fillers made from hyaluronic acid can be dissolved quickly with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within 24 hours.  Although this is rarely requested, some patients feel reassured knowing they can reverse the effects quickly, if desired.  Since Restylane® contains no animal proteins, which limits any risk of allergic reactions or the transmission of animal-based diseases, there is no pre-testing required.  Restylane® is an excellent filler to be used in the hollow area under the eyes as well as the nasolabial folds and lips.

What areas can be treated with Restylane®?
Restylane® is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the deep “smile lines” between the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds).  Restylane® can also be used off-label to correct hollowing under the eyes; increase lip size; improve moderate to severe wrinkling around the corners of the mouth, between the nose and upper lip, and from the lips to the jaw line (“marionette lines”); add volume to the cheeks and temples; and as a non-surgical browlift.

Is Restylane® safe and are there any possible side effects?
Used in more than 10 million treatments worldwide, Restylane® is the world’s most studied cosmetic filler and has a well-defined safety profile.  Composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, Restylane® is biocompatible and will be broken down naturally by the body.  Side effects from Restylane® are typically mild and rare. Temporary redness and swelling at the injection site is possible. These effects usually resolve within a few days and can be covered with makeup if desired.  Before your treatmentwill discuss with you any possible side effects and answer any questions you may have about safety.

Who should administer Restylane®?
Restylane® injections are best administered by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon with an understanding of proper technique and safety.  Both Dr.  have years of experience in administering Restylane® and would be happy to answer your questions about whether Restylane ® is right for you.

How long will the results last?
The results from Restylane® are virtually instantaneous and typically last up to 6 months.  Longer-lasting results can be obtained in certain areas, such as under the eyes, and with subsequent treatments. Treatments at 4 to 6 month intervals is most common, though   will discuss with you what treatment schedule will best suit your needs.

Can the effects be reversed if desired?
Yes.  All hyaluronic acid fillers may be quickly dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.  Though it is very rarely requested, first-time patients may feel more comfortable knowing that the effects can be reversed quickly, easily, and safely, usually within 24 hours.

Can Restylane® be combined with other procedures?
Yes.  Various dermal fillers and other cosmetic injectables, such as BOTOX®, are often used concurrently to treat a variety of facial areas.  Additionally, different types of fillers can be used synergistically as part of advanced layer techniques.  For example,  may elect to use one filler in the deep dermis to provide structural foundation, another in the mid-dermis to replace lost volume, and a superficial filler to help smooth away surface lines and wrinkles.   Restylane ® may also be used in combination with laser treatments or other procedures for even better results.  Dr. Levine will discuss with you what procedure or combination of procedures may best suit your specific needs.

How can I prepare for Restylane® treatment?
During your initial consultation, ill thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations, including possible risks and the best way to prepare for your treatment.  As much as possible, patients should avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen-containing products (such as Advil and Motrin), St. John’s Wort, high doses of vitamin E supplements, and other blood thinners (unless medically necessary) for 1 week prior to treatment in order to minimize the risk of bruising. Patients should also avoid red wine and multivitamins for 2 days prior to treatment.

What should I expect during treatment?
Restylane® treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our offices.  The procedure is quick and simple, with minimal discomfort.  A topical anesthetic may be used to increase patient comfort.  Restylane® with an added anesthetic is also available.  Restylane® will be injected into the treatment area using an ultra-fine needle.  Results are seen practically instantaneously.  You can resume your normal activities immediately following treatment.

What should I expect after treatment?
Mild swelling and bruising is possible, but not always present, for a few days following treatment.  This depends on the location treated and the amount of filler that is needed.  Makeup may be worn to cover any redness. You may take Tylenol for discomfort if there is any, but don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen, which may increase bruising.  Anti-bruising products containing Arnica Montana and Bromelain are offered and topical care discussed.  will determine which aftercare product is right for you. After treatment, patients may also choose to have LED therapy, which is known to significantly improve healing time and decrease inflammation.

If you are unhappy with signs of aging such as hollows under your eyes, sunken cheeks, facial folds, or thin lips, the injectable fillers Restylane and Perlane may be able to help. These fillers are made of a natural, safe material normally present in your skin, and give long-lasting results. Injections of these facial fillers can allow you to experience improvement in your facial appearance for six months or more.

Restylane and Perlane are two of the many injectable fillers we offer at Juva Skin and Laser Center in central Manhattan. The best way to learn if they are the right ones for you is with a personal consultation. or email us today to schedule an appointment.

What Is Restylane?

Restylane is an injectable filler derived from hyaluronic acid, similar to Juvéderm. Hyaluronic acid is a natural moisturizing component found in your skin, joints, and eyes. Hyaluronic acid in your skin diminishes with age, which is partly responsible for the dulling and loss of elasticity due to aging. The hyaluronic acid used in Restylane is not derived from an animal source, making it less likely to cause an allergic reaction, and no allergy test is required before treatment.

Restylane is created with very small granules of hyaluronic acid, which has a gel-like consistency. Perlane is chemically the same as Restylane, but has larger granules. The granular texture is intended to improve the longevity of results, and because Restylane is soft, its small grains do not generally create any visible bumps. Restylane is also available with Lidocaine to decrease localized discomfort and swelling that some people experience.

What Can Restylane Treat?

Restylane is a very flexible injectable filler. It can be used any place where additional volume is desired, including:

Lip augmentation
Hollows under the eyes
Tear troughs
Sunken cheeks
Nasolabial folds (parenthesis lines around the mouth)
Restylane is an ideal surface treatment, but the longevity of results can often be improved by layering it with Perlane, especially for sunken cheeks and deep nasolabial folds. The larger grains of Perlane help it resist breakdown by the body and perform more lifting.

Loss of lip volume is inevitable. The little lines that come along with thinning lips generally are unavoidable too, and the deeper they become, the more difficult they are to deal with.

What is hyaluronic acid? NYC New York NY

Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar found throughout all living organisms that retains water — absorbing more than 1,000 times its weight — and adds volume to the skin’s surface. In addition, hyaluronic acid binds with collagen and elastin and transports essential nutrients to these fibers. The triple combination of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid provides structure, elasticity and volume to the skin and contributes to its overall appearance.
As the skin ages and is exposed to environmental pollutants and ultraviolet rays, the cells lose the ability to produce hyaluronic acid. As a result, the skin begins to lose volume, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds. Dermal fillers compromised of crossed-linked hyaluronic acid are used by physicians to help temporarily replace lost hyaluronic acid and to restore skin volume and a smooth, natural appearance.

How does Restylane Lyft work? NYC New York, NY

How does Restylane Lyft work?

Restylane Lyft® is injected into the skin to lift folds and replace lost facial volume from fat loss, bone loss and collagen degradation. Lyft’s water-loving nature attracts and binds water molecules to help maintain volume.
Restylane Lyft is composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the body. The hyaluronic acid in fillers is a crystal clear gel that is chemically cross-linked (the long chemical strands are tied together) to delay breakdown by skin enzymes. All Restylane products are non-animal-based and free from animal protein. This quality prevents disease transmission. Allergy pre-testing is not necessary. Also distinct from other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, Restylane products are minimally cross-linked, making them similar to the natural hyaluronic acid found in the body

How is Restylane Lyft different from Restylane? NYC New York, NY

Both Restylane Lyft and Restylane are composed of hyaluronic acid. The primary difference between Restylane and Lyft is that the hyaluronic acid gel particles in Lyft are larger than those found in Restylane. This gives the filler additional ability to lift and fill the areas of injection that require a denser formulation to hold shape. Lyft and Restylane are perfect complements to one another.

Restylane® Lyft, initially approved by the FDA in Spring of 2007 under the name Perlane, is a “mid-dermal” hyaluronic acid filler product. As a sister product to Restylane, Lyft is designed for more pronounced facial folds and cheek and mid face volume restoration.

Thank you for your question.

All procedures carry risk.  In general, absorbable, injectable fillers, such as Restylane are well tolerated in the face.

To be sure what is right for you, see two or more experienced, licensed and certified providers for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have the procedure.

Restylane Facelift Suitable for Any Woman NYC New York NY

Injectable fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, (hyaluronic acid)  and Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite), can help replace volume loss that is often seen in the aging face.  These fillers can be useful in restoring a more youthful appearance to the cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds and marionette lines around the mouth, and lips.  Although these injectable fillers are often referred to as a liquid face lift, they primarily replace subcutaneous fat and connective tissue volume loss.  They can be used alone or as an adjunct to a surgical face lift.  However, if there is significant sagging of the face - jowling, etc. - a surgical face lift would be the better option.

Combination of Botox and dermal fillers for deeper forehead and nasal bridge lines nyc new york ny

Thanks for the interesting question. I often have patients who ask me the very same thing during their skin consultations. The approach which I have found most helpful is to use Botox or Dysport for these deep horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines between the eyebrows, and nasal bridge lines ("bunny lines") first and then see the patient back in 1-2 weeks. At this point if there is a bit of a residual wrinkle, a small amount of a filler such as Restylane or Juvederm can be placed to fill it. Because these lines are related to muscle activity constantly folding the overlying skin, the best approach is to start with a neuromodulator such as Botox or Dysport to relax the muscles. The vast majority of the time, this single treatment is sufficient.

Nasolabial injections of Restylane or Juvederm is both an art and a science nyc new york ny

It is most important to seek out an experienced board certified M.D. to do your injections.  Depending on the patient, great results can be performed with either.  I love Restylane for most patients because it has remarkably natural results.  Juvederm is thicker and I reserve that for deeper nasolabial folds and then have the best results.  Remember to find a dermatologist who has been injecting for a long time to have the best results.

How long does Restylane last? It depends largely on the skill of your injector nyc new york ny

There is no set timeline on how long a filler lasts. It all depends on how much is injected and the areas that are injected. If you put a very small (or too small) amount in, you won't get a good result and it will last a very short time.

What I see in most of these cases where people say it 'didn't last' is that they only had a small budget for fillers and wanted too many areas injected at the same time. If I have a patient with unrealistic expectations, I tell them to either do one area alone or, if necessary, save up to do more of a filler in the future so that the area is done in the right way.

Lastly, the skill of the injector is very important here. There are many new injectors who simply don't know what they are doing and how to do it. This means that they are injecting fillers in the wrong place and that can often result in very short length of activity.

It is so very important to go to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who actually does their own injections. While they may have 'staff' who do injections reasonably well, the only way they are going to get skills that translate to good injections is to do it themselves and not pawn it off to someone.

Which filler is best for nasolabial folds? nyc new york ny

Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm Ultra Plus, Perlane and biostimulatory fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra work well for nasolabial folds.

Of the hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvederm lasts longer than Restylane.  The larger, more robust particles of Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane work better in the nasolabial folds than the smaller, more delicate particles of Juvederm Ultra or Restylane.  The smaller particle fillers like Juvederm Ultra and Restylane work better for areas like the lips and fine wrinles that need filling.

Biostimulatory fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra are excellent for the nasolabial folds.  Part of their action is stimulating the skin's own production of collagen, which adds volume in that area. These fillers also last longer than the hyaluronic acid filliers.  However, the downside of these is the difficulty in removing them if there is an adverse reaction.

The most important factor are the qualification and experience of the doctor injecting these materials.

Restylane is the ideal filler for treating marionette lines nyc new york ny

Other dermal-fillers, such as Perlane, Juvederm, or Radiesse can also be used to treat the smile-lines.  If you are pleased with the results of the temporary dermal-fillers, you may want to consider using Artefill (a semi-permanent filler) for your next treatment.  Artefill can last upward to 12 months!

Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Artefill are all FDA-approved treatments for the marionette lines.  They are safe, effective ways to rejuvenate your appearance.  Ultimately, the depth of your lines, coupled with your skin thickness will determine which filler will work best for you.

I suggest finding a physician with the credentials, experience, and viewing actual patient before/after photographs to achieve the best results.

Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm all work well for nasolabial folds nyc new york ny

In my experience, all three of these products work beautifully for the nasolabial folds, also called the parentheses lines, extending between the edges of the nostrils and the corners of the mouth. The primary difference between them is that Restylane and Juvederm are have a shorter duration (~ 6-9 months) as compared with Radiesse, which can last up to 18 months or longer. I have not found a

difference in duration between Restylane and Juvederm. The advantage of these hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers is that they can be dissolved with a simple injection of hyaluronidase in the unlikely event of a lump or asymmetry. Radiesse cannot be dissolved and is slightly more expensive at our center. I have not found a difference in the degree of bruising with any of these fillers
